The government of India had conducted a nation-wide trial of a mobile-based alert system on Saturday for disaster situation. For this, a text message was sent on everyone’s phone. This trial was done by the Department of Telecommunication (DoT) in collaboration with National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
The main purpose of this test is to alert people in case of any emergency. Alerts were sent in several regional languages, including Hindi and English.
India has launched a cell broadcast service using indigenous technology, providing citizens with immediate disaster information. Alert Citizens, Safe Nation. The public does not need to take any action upon receiving this message. This is a test message.
The main important part of this system
This alert system works on a special technology, which is called Common Alerting Protocol (CAP). The main purpose of this system is to provide possible disaster information within the time. When a danger occurs in an area, an immediate warning is sent to the mobile phones of those present. This alert comes in the form of an SMS and sometimes a loud alarm or siren sounds on the phone to alert people immediately.
What is the requirement of this test?
The main aim of this alert trial by the NDMA is to communicate with individuals in urgent situations like a tsunami, earthquake, or lightning strike. Furthermore, in case of a human-caused incident or a natural calamity, like a gas leak or chemical threat, the system will issue prompt warnings for individuals to evacuate.
Where is the alert test being conducted?
This alert test is basically done in the part of Delhi-NCR but with the Moreover, testing is set to occur at various times in other states and union territories. Media reports indicate that this testing will not take place in border regions. In states where elections are taking place, no alert messages will be dispatched to any mobile devices.
DoT had already provided this information
The DoT has already issued a notice to ensure that no one is alarmed or worried about this test on their mobile phone. According to the DoT, this is a trial of an emergency alert system.
The siren will sound on silent mode also
A siren-like sound that accompanies the alert message is also part of this trial system. It has been designed to sound even if your phone is on silent mode, and you will receive an alert. The government believes that even a second’s delay can be fatal in a disaster situation, so it has been decided to ensure that people receive an alert without delay when needed.
This system will save lives!
In a country as vast and diverse as India, where natural disasters like floods, cyclones, and earthquakes occur annually, such an alert system can be helpful. It will alert people about danger in advance, enabling those in the area to reach safety. This can significantly reduce the loss of both life and property.
